I learned about the painting with light technique in 2008 when I attended an exhibition and workshop by the Seeing With Photography collaborative group from New York City. All the artists in this group are either low vision or completely blind. I was inspired by their work and happy to learn about the technique.
I find the technique works best for me with portraits. I take the photograph in a completely darkened room, with only a mag flashlight as the source of illumination. I set the camera on a tripod, with the shutter open to an unlimited exposure time, while moving the flashlight back and forth over the subject. When I feel I have lit the subject enough, I end the exposure. |
